When you open the shareware version of MusicPal, you'll see this opening screen:

You may try MusicPal 30 times. After that this version expires and you have to register to continue working with it. An expired version will start with an increasing Shareware delay.

Entering a note

Enter a note To enter a note you simply press the screen:
Now move the pen while it still touches the screen. The note follows the pen. When the note is at it's correct position you can remove the pen from the screen.
You can also enter notes by using the keyboard.
























Selecting notes

Select notes To select notes you first have to set selection mode on by pressing the select symbol on the lower side of the screen.
Now move the pen to the upper left corner of the notes to select and press the screen. Move the pen to the lower right corner of the screen, and keep the pen on the screen. After you release the pen from the screen all notes that are within the area of the upper left and lower right corner are selected.
























Deleting notes

Delete notes To delete notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, choose from the menu [Delete note(s)]. All selected notes will be deleted.
























Duplicating notes

Duplicate notes To duplicate notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, choose from the menu [Duplicate ]. All selected notes will be duplicated. Now you can move the selected notes.
























Copy notes to another measure

Copy notes To copy notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, choose from the menu [Copy to]. Now move the pen to the measure you want to copy the notes to. After you press the screen all selectes notes will be copied to that measure.
























Move notes

Move notes To move notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, set the move mode by pressing the move symbol on the lower side of the screen. All selected notes will follow the movement of the pen on the screen. You can also move selected notes up and down by pressing the scroll buttons of your handheld.
























Transpose notes

Transpose notes To transpose notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, hoose from the menu [Transpose +1] or [Transpose -1]. All selected notes will be transposed by one (up or down). You can also move selected notes up and down by pressing the scroll buttons of your handheld.
























Change tempo of notes

Change tempo To change the tempo of notes you first have to select them.
After you have selected the notes, hoose from the menu [Tempo *2] or [Tempo /2]. The tempo of all selected notes will multiplied or divided by 2.
























Low notes up

Low notes up The palm is not really a sound device. So low notes can sound too low. Especially when you have imported a PC midi file this problem occurs. To get a more descent sound, you can transpose all notes lower then the low "C" by one octave.
























Inserting and deleting measures.

Insert or delete measures To insert or delete a measure select from de [Edit] menu [Insert measure] or [Delete measure]. Now move to the position you want to insert or delete a measure and press the screen.
























Load or save files.

To load a file choose from the [File] menu [Load].

A list of saved midi files appears:

Select the file you want to load and press the "OK" button.

To save an already opened file choose [Save] from the [File] menu. The file will be saved. If you are using a new file it's name is "noname.mid".

To change the name of a file choose [Saveas] from the [File] menu. A window appers where you can enter the name:

Now enter the name and press the "OK" button.























Delete a midi file.

To delete a file choose from the [File] menu [Load].
A list of saved midi files appears:

Select the file you want to delete and press the "Delete" button.

























Playback settings of the program: Follow notes when playing

Settings When you want to see what notes are played you can set this option by clicking the checkbox. When playing the midi file a rectangle will be placed around the current measure played.

Settings of the program: Note length is pen pressed

This option is used when entering notes with the keyboard.
When this option is set, the length of the notes will be the time a certain key is pressed by touching the screen.
If this option is not set you can select a note length at the bottom of the screen.













































Settings of the program: Sound when entering note

Settings: sound when entering note This option is used when entering notes in the score-screen.
When this option is set, you will hear the sound of the note you are entering.
























Settings of the program: Key signature

Settings: Key signature To set the key signature press the sharp or flat symbol as many times as needed (max. 6 times). When for instance 2 flat:

Settings of the program: Time signature

Settings: Time signature You can set the time signature from 2/2 to 12/12 by choosing a value from the list boxes.
























Settings of the program: Undo

Settings: Undo You can enable the undo function of the program by checking the undo checkbox in the settings window. Now you can undo your last action. The undo function however will slow down Musicpal while the size of the midi file increases.
























Settings of the program: Grey lines

Settings: Grey lines You can choose to show the lines in a light grey color. This will enhance the visibility of stem lines.

Playback settings: Volume

Settings: Volume You can set the volume that a melody is played on your Palm from 0 (silent) to 100 (Maximum) by choosing a value with the scroll bar in the playback options window.


Playback settings: Tempo

Settings: Tempo You can set the tempo that a melody is played on your Palm from 2 (very slow) to 240 (Maximum) by choosing a value with the scroll bar in the playback options window.
























Settings of the program: Chord delay

Settings: Chord delay This option is used to set the delay between notes in a chord.
Most handhelds aren't polyphone, so to play a chord you have to rapidly repeat all notes in a chord to get an idea of the chord. With this option you can set time each separate note will be heard.
























Interaction with your PC: Convert and install midi files to Palm

To interact with your PC you need the Windows program "Midipalm", that comes along with this progam.
Mid conversion program
To convert a midi file to a palm you have to:
- Start the program Palm Midi Conversion,
- Use the button "Convert PC midi-file to MusicPal" to choose a midi file to convert to the palm.
- Check the checkox "Install on palm" to automatically install the file on the palm (when using Hotsync)
- Choose a name for the midi file that is installed on the palm.

Because of the limited memory of a handheld, the maximum amount of notes is limited to 1500, which mostly is more dan enough to convert a midi file.























Interaction with your PC: Convert Palm midi files to PC format

To interact with your PC you need the Windows program "Midipalm", that comes along with this progam.
To convert a palm midi file to a PC idi file you have to:
- Start the program Palm Midi Conversion,
- Use the button "Convert Palm MusicPal to PC Midi file" to choose a midi file to convert to the PC. You can find the midi file you produced with Musicpal in the backup-map of the Palm directory on your PC. The name of the MusicPal files ends with "_mid.PDB"
- Choose a name for the midi file that is installed on the PC.
